Blood flow in Patient-specific carotid arteries

This study focuses on the reconstruction of patient-specific carotid arteries in order to evaluate blood flow characteristics and Wall Shear Stress distributions within the vascular domain. The geometry reconstruction and processing are performed using VMTK and ParaView, while the hemodynamic behavior is investigated through computational tools and finite volume analyses.

The numerical results reveal complex flow patterns and regions of elevated velocity near the bifurcation area, caused by the presence of severe stenosis. High TAWSS values are observed in both the internal and external branches of the left carotid bifurcation, suggesting a significant risk of endothelial injury and potentially unstable vascular conditions.

Finite volume simulation of the left carotid artery

Goal: Reconstruction of patient-specific carotid arteries to evaluate blood flow and Wall Shear Stress

Methods: VMTK, Paraview, finite volume analysis and computational tools

Results: The patient is at risk of endothelial injury due to severe stenosis in both the internal and external branches of the left carotid bifurcation, as indicated by the high TAWSS values
