Buckling analysis of beams made of Gyroid cells

This study examines the instability behavior of beams made by repeating Gyroid cells, a TPMS structure with unique geometrical and mechanical properties. A geometrical analysis of a single Gyroid cell reveals an interesting variations in inertia and area along the beam’s axial direction.

Finite element buckling analyses  show significantly low critical load, buckling mode shapes equal to what we expect from a classical Euler theory and some local torsional effects.

Buckling analysis of a gyroid-based beam structure

Goal: Investigation of the variation of inertia and area in a gyroid cell and analysis of the buckling behaviour of a gyroid-based beam structure

Methods: Design and code writing for the generation of TPMS cells, finite element method, buckling beam theories

Results: Gyroid-based beam structure has low critical load, showing Eulerian buckling mode shapes and some local torsional effects
