Computational thermo-fluid dynamic simulations of spray nozzles

Thermo-fluid dynamics simulations are performed to reproduce a test bench designed to assess the correct functionality of spray nozzles during the assembly phase. The nozzle sprays air at ambient temperature onto a hot surface, which subsequently cools down. A snapshot of the surface is then taken to study the temperature footprint left by the flow.

By replicating this experimental setup, we gain insights into the complex fluid dynamics of the spray nozzle under examination (in terms of inlet flow rate and velocities) and evaluating the footprint on the hot matrix.

Computational domain of the spray nozzles
Contour plot of velocities on a central plane of the air domain
Contour plot of temperature on the surface of the hot matrix

Goal: Set-up of a computational thermo-fluid dynamic analysis to accurately reproduce an experimental setup of a spray nozzle

Methods: CAD modeling, finite volume analysis and computational tools

Results: Accurate reproduction of the experimental setup, determination of the airflow emitted by the spray nozzle and visualization of the temperature footprint on the hot matrix
