Nitinol

Nitinol Course: Fundamentals, Characterization, and Simulations

A 3-day course that provides a comprehensive understanding of Nitinol’s unique behaviour and an overview on SMA, from phase transformation and superelasticity to constitutive modelling. Through a combination of thoery, laboratory, and hands-on session with Abaqus, participants will learn how to characterize Nitinol performance, design components such as wires, and validate experimental results through numerical modeling.

3-Day Course

3-Day Course (2 Days Theory + 1 Day Hands-On)

General objectives

  • Understand the physical phenomena underlying Nitinol and other Shape Memory materials (martensitic/austenitic transformation, superelasticity, etc.) and constitutive models
  • Measure and characterize Nitinol behaviour (tensile tests, thermomechanical cycles, fatigue)
  • Design components (wires, stents) considering material and process limitations
  • Perform laboratory experiments
  • Simulate Nitinol behavior using commercial softwares (Abaqus, Ansys, Comsol) and validate experimental results

Location

Vistarino Palace (to be confirmed)

In the 18th century, the Bellisomi-Vistarino Palace was the residence of a noble family. It is situated in the heart of Pavia, facing the Ticino River. It is a proper “Villa of delight”, with frescoed rooms, spaces reserved for music, for reading and conversation, a park, a viewpoint, a chapel and stables. (website)

Guest room service

Those attending course can reside in the Vistarino Palace guest rooms. This is a really unique opportunity to discover the hospitality of the “Villa of Delights”.

There are 10 single and double rooms with private bathroom, reserved for the Vistarino Palace guest room hosts. Services include also breakfast and (upon request) meals, wifi and long distance learning connections, the opportunity to meet in XVII century decorated halls, in the mere centre of the old city of Pavia.

Course participants are required to contact Palazzo Vistarino directly to book their rooms. Accommodation is not included in the registration fee.
